Until very recently Takaungu Village was littered with plastic waste, diapers and dump sites. Takaungu Safi began in early 2016 as a move to clean up the village and help the community take responsibility for their immediate environment. Community support at first was slow, but once results were seen villagers became involved and together we managed to tidy up Takaungu. Mombasa Cement donated over 40 drums that were distributed throughout the village and are regularly emptied by the Takaungu Safi team. Monthly beach clean-ups have been ongoing along the beaches surrounding Takaungu Creek.
Takaungu Safi is our effort to bring together the people of Takaungu to show that we care for our environment what we do with our rubbish.
But there is a lot to be done, so our main goal is to spread environmental consciousness. Next steps include:
Promoting alternatives to plastic bags
Reducing the use of plastic bottles and packing and going back to traditional and environment friendly alternatives
