We believe that education is key to successful conservation. Environmental awareness is often lacking within local communities, and therefore educating and engaging them is an essential step towards changing this situation. We visit the schools in Takaungu to raise children’s environmental consciousness and engage them in our activities. Three information boards have been placed around the Takaungu area which are updated on a monthly basis with relevant information on environmental issues affecting the local community. Topics displayed include fishing, plastic pollution and general environmental awareness.
Tree Planting
As part of the Takaungu Safi project indiginous trees have been planted throughout the village by the Creek Guardians. In years to come these trees will provide shade and a healthy environment to the people of Takaungu.
To date 52 trees have been planted in Takaungu Village, kindly donated from Kivukoni Indigenous Tree Nursery. The Creek Guardians built a fence around each one after planting to protect them from goats and cows, and they water them during the dry season. A tree is a meeting place, out of the hot sun, where people gather. We hope these trees bring future generations together to care for their surroundings.
